Hi there!

My son did the RGS exam last week and has been called back for a 'maths interview'.

Has anyone been through this and give any guidance on format, difficulty, and useful prep we can do etc.?

Many thanks!!

i haven't been through it but imagine the interview may cover areas where the performance in a particular section of maths may be in some doubt...so did your son feel like he struggled on any particular questions?

As I understand it, a second interview means you are in the middle third and the reason for the maths interview may be because it was the maths paper that meant your son did not make the top third. It still means he is in with a chance.

Does he have any weak areas in maths? I would just make sure all the basics are covered by doing some 11+ assessment practice papers which may also throw up weak areas.

As for format, may be worth asking the school themselves.

I think they will be looking at how teachable he is, how quickly he can absorb new information as well as what he already knows.
I think he must communicate with them-- tell them if there is a word he hasn't met before etc
Speed may be important too , it is possible to get the answers right but be a bit slow about it on the other hand he mustn't be too impulsive
Check his tables are very sound including division answers
If given paper and pencil a quick diagram is fine
May be too late but traditional multiplication is quicker than grid and traditional long division quicker than chunking.Maybe a few tutoring sessions too
Hope this helps - Good luck.

Many thanks to all - most useful!

If anyone out there has DS that has actually had one of these, that would be very welcome.

Maybe some level 6 maths papers? You can download them for free I think.

How did it go?

JaneyPal · 30/01/2014 11:25

He said 'very well'......but always does, regardless!

Asked him 5 questions some linked to those he got wrong in the exam itself.

Surely we will get a no letter with the others this week if the second interview was weak? How many places are left for them, do you know?

JaneyPal · 30/01/2014 12:43

Be very careful on this one!!!!

He was told and I've heard elsewhere that 2nd interviewees won't hear until mid -feb!!!!

So it means we are in a nightmare....wait the longest and it could still be a no!

I don't understand the logic if this as they should be able to send out the no's quickly and with the early stage no's shouldn't they?

And re places, no one really knows.

But it is not just a few - many bits got through interview so don't worry, it is certainly not all of us chasing 2 places!

Thank you for these words of wisdom. Maybe they could all get offers if they prove themselves.....?! Wishful thinking no doubt!

My son was not called for the second interview - but we did not get a rejection letter either .. what does it mean? shall I call them?
