French has suddenly got tough, my dd says.

Used to get 10 out of 10 all the time, dropped to 7 on a few occasions due to masculine and feminine (which I believe one just has to learnt) and when and how to use the verb aller.

In any case, she has exams coming up soon. Have used GCP which was not that great as it was for Maths and Science. Any other suggestions would be really appreciated.

linguascope is excellent for learning vocab in a variety of ways if the school subscribes to it. This site also has lots of useful links:

www.uni.edu/becker/french31.html

As far as gender goes there are a few general rules but there are so many exceptions to them that they are not always useful! Learning the gender at the same time as learning the word is key - ie learn le chat, rather than just chat. I always found colour useful so whenever learning vocab write all the masc in blue, all the fem in red and all the plural in green, or use different colours of post-it notes.

French.about.com has some useful tips for learning/revising. The best tip though is little and often - very few people can leave it to the night before and really learn vocab thoroughly. 10 minutes per day is much more effective than one long session.

good grammar revision exercises here She should also use the grammar section at the back of her text book and carefully read over any grammar notes in her exercise book. A couple of minutes a day re-reading notes is better than hours of revision just before the exam.

Brilliant link, thanks Lady

Being a free languages website nerd, I can recommend:

french.about.com/ - link to what Penguin was talking about
www.bbc.co.uk/languages/french/mafrance/
apprendre.tv5monde.com/
www.polarfle.com/indexbis.htm
www.lepointdufle.net/cours-de-francais.htm
francaisenligne.free.fr/lire/activites.php
www.bonjourdefrance.com/n8/app1.htm
grammaire.reverso.net/ - this one might be a bit too advanced, but is still a good reference

Good luck to your DD - I love French! Once this lot of languages are over, she could improve a lot by practicing with a friend: there is an organisation called eTandem that's run by a couple of European universities who will find a partner for her who has about the same standard in English as she has in French. Her school might know about it though I've been promoting it everywhere and have yet to find any school that does

This lot of exams, I mean, not languages....!
