Can someone please tell me when my October 2006 child would start senior school in England?

Many thanks.

Thanks, would he be one of the youngest or oldest?

Oldest

One of oldest in year , just as currently. Presumably he's year 2 now and will stay with that peer group.

slalomsuki · 05/11/2013 07:16

One of the oldest in the class. The year runs September to August birthday wise.

Hi, no we're in scotland so he's currently young and in year 3.

Thanks everyone!

Both England and Scotland have 13 years at school - we just number them differently.

P1=approx Reception.
P1 to P7, Y1 to Y6 Primary School.
S1 to S6, Y7 to Y11 and then 2 years in 6th Form (Y12 and 13) secondary schooling.

Slight changes if it's an area that has middle schools - but the year numbering doesn't change.

Many difference is that an October child would go from being at the young end of the year in Scotland (since the youngest can truly defer) to being very much at the oldest end of the year.

Thanks! I'm being quite dense I know but how old would be be when he left school in England, assuming he stayed all the way through including 6th form?

In Scotland he would be 17, about to turn 18 but fairly young for his year as half will be 18 by the time they leave.

He would leave at 18.

Shente · 05/11/2013 11:07

(in the June following his 18th b'day once the exams are over)

Yes, he would start compulsory schooling (Y1) a year later in England so would finish a year later.

Technically as he would not yet be 5 when he starts P1 in August, he could defer entry until the following year if you didn't feel he was ready. In practice, very few September, October or November (or even December) babies are deferred: the council won't pay for nursery unless you can get the support of the nursery (and an Educational Psychologist? - not sure about that) to say that the child is not yet ready for school.
