Twelve year old's handwriting has deteriorated since starting secondary school. Any tips, resources and advice to get her back on track.

A fountain pen, or any other pen that will slow her writing down! Have just been told by a handwriting tutor that many rollerballs, etc, that they use at secondary school let the kids write too fast.

(BTW I totally recommend going to a handwriting tutor, if you can afford it and if your daughter's writing gets worse. I'd never been to a tutor of any sort and didn't know what to expect, but it was incredibly helpful.)

Or just get some handwriting instruction & exercise books for children off Amazon. You might have to go back to basics a bit as the exercises etc might be more aimed at primary school, but I'm sure its possible to create your own programme.

OP are your teachers concerned about your DC's handwriting?

If yes then the school should be able to help her however if not then I really would not worry about it at this stage. My 15 yr old DS has terrible hand writing but his teachers have always told me that as long as they can read it then its OK. If its illegible then clearly intervention is needed.

I also am finding that my 12yr old DD writing changes by the week..as she often experiments with different styles. Hope this helps.

Once my kids hit secondary school, they realised that they didn't actually have to join their letters up anymore, and that's made a big difference to their writing. Mine was the same with "proper" handwriting, but now I print, mine is lovely.
