Apparently my Y8 is not grasping PEE in English.

Can anyone give me any tips ( or websites or workbooks ) as to how to teach him this?

I'm an English teacher and this is a technique we teach to enable pupils to write detailed paragraphs.

Point: Jack is presented as a bully ( a point should be short and it is something you know about the text)
Evidence: 'Jack pushed Piggy to the ground'. ( evidence is always a quote from the text being studied)
Explain: this shows that Jack is physically aggressive and is using violence to assert his authority. (The explanation should analyse the quote in detail-use phrases such as this shows or this suggests)

Once they get it they are fine, it just takes practise.

Thanks. That's very helpful

Take care to ensure that the explanation doesn't just 'translate' or paraphrase the quotation. When checking see if you can say how or why after what they've written. I usually try and get them to write more than one sentence - I teach boys who have a tendency to try and just get away with the minimum.
