GCSE grade queries - ART and ENGLISH

I have two queries regarding my DS's recent GCSE results that I wonder if any MNetters have any experience of.

Firstly, he gained a C grade in English, but after searching some University websites has found the course that he would love to be aiming for requires a B grade. Is there any point in retaking this GCSE or just accept that some doors are already closed?

Also, he gained a grade B in Art, missing an A by 1 point. I called the school to ask about a remark but was told that remarks don't apply in Art as the marking is done in school. Is that it or is there anything else that can be done?

In relation to the university application, it really depends on whether the B in English is a degree subject requirement (eg asked for the dept) or a general requirement (applies across the university to all degree courses).

If it is a subject requirement, the admissions tutor will usually have the ability to be flexible, but there would need to be good evidence as to why (so for example, a A or B at A level would trump the C at GCSE).

Subject grades at GCSE and usually there for a good reason. So, for example, at my uni, you need a B grade Maths GCSE to take Psychology because students with a C grade would struggle with the statistics etc.

If it is a university general requirement, then it is very unlikely that the application would succeed.

A retake would be well worth it - as long as your prepared that the grade may not improve - if your child is really set on those courses at those universities. Good luck whatever you decide.
