2am and i'm stressing about dd and school shoes, are all the girls going to be wearing brogues??

everywhere seems to have little else but brogues but dd doesn't like them. that style of shoe would be better for her feet though as ballet pumps just slip off and as she's heading for year 7, she doesn't want velcro straps as she's worried they'll be considered babyish.

i'm just worried i'm going to end up replacing whatever we get now with brogues once she realises everyone else is wearing them.

I don't have a clue about teenage girls and their shoe preferences but there's bugger all you can do about it at 2am. Go to sleep and think about it in the morning.

dd has awkward feet, flat footed, has arch supports to go in her shoes too, tried on about 20 pairs yesterday and found none that fitted right.

I'm the same I've bought cheap slip on shoes with a view to buying her some more once she's seen what everyone else is wearing!

My Y8 will be, as she has refused to go shoe shopping and says last years brogues will do.

My Y11 will be wearing frumpy comfortable Clarks sports Mary Janes, with velcro, as she has for the last 4 years. She hates school shoes and would be way way happier in ankle boots like millions of women wear to the office with their black trousers, but school insist on shoes for some insane reason.

My daughter is going into Year 8 and still wearing velcro straps as it's the only style that suit her foot. She's not the only one still wearing them either, she walks to school with four girls, three wear Velcro straps, one always wear pumps and the other either Velcro or pumps. She tried brogues on, they were uncomfortable and was happy to settle for her present shoes.

Another vote for a pair of cheapies until the first or second weekend, when she's had a chance to see what the rest of her peers are wearing. I'm not too old to remember the mortifyingness of having the 'wrong' clothing and accessories!

Can't you just go shopping for something she likes? Why does she need to wear the same as her peers?

There are some penny loafers in this years school range. Just had to dismiss them at shoe this morning for DD who has enormous feet, but still in juniors and not allowed 'slip on shoes'. They looked a nice hard wearing shoe better than the Velcro strapped ballet pumps which were the only shoes to fit big foot that meet the schools criteria.

DD going into y7 has chosen Startrite samba v v trad, oldfashioned even with velcro. I wouldn't have chosen them myself and I suggested brogues were less conspicuous but she loves them. She knows she will have them all year (they've got plenty of growing room) and I'm hoping she stays happy with them. If she has a volte face - tough!

My DD1 has worn school shoes with Velcro straps for Years 7, 8 and 9. In Year 7 most of the girls wore school shoes with Velcro at her school, although that was probably mainly because they weren't allowed to wear pumps. DD2 has just finished Year 7 and she wore shoes with Velcro. She says that a lot of girls in her year wore Velcro shoes too, others wore pumps and some wore brogues, although it was mainly the older girls who wore them at her school.

I'm stressing about shoes too.

DD really wants these but they're out of stock in all our local M&S stores and online. And we couldn't find anything similar in her size in the numerous other shoe shops we tried.

To make matter worse we go on holiday tomorrow and only get back one day before school starts AND she's outgrown her old school shoes

She saves fashionable for converse, boots and gladiator sandals at home.

Have taken dds start rite stone back and ordered samba. They are plain black Mary Janes. The stone has hearts on and were too primary school ish

Dd has small wide feet with a high instep. Luckily ballet flats are banned at her new school & I'm told they have regular shoe inspections. School sent us a photocopied sheet of acceptable & non acceptable styles.

Lots of lace-ups and brogues at my DD's secondary school this week but DD doesn't like them so we went for these ones www.clarks.co.uk/p/20346512 ... she likes them, they stay on ok and they look ok with both skirts and trousers. And the strap isn't too obviously baby-velcro - in fact I spotted quite a few like them as the kids were coming out.

Can you tell I've been having the same worries about fitting in, wearing the 'right' stuff etc?!!

Brogues are lace up shoes with the dotty pattern round like old fashioned men's shoes.

They are good and supportive but better for narrow feet. They are not wide enough for dd.

FGS. 11/12 year olds need shoes that fit and are comfy. My dd goes to Y11 next year. We've never had any of this nonsense. She has a pair of Samba to go back in and doesn't want or need a new pair. Perhaps if mums were more matter of fact about it so would be the girls. Utterly ridiculous - same as bags.

They are the popular choice this year I think - all the teens in our local Clarks shop seemed to be buying them
