glasgow secondary schools - need advice

Moving to glasgow in 2014 ... Any advice on good independent schools in the glasgow area appreciated. Looking for places for 2 ds aged 10 & 9

High School of Glasgow is where I would start. Had a mini tour recently and was very impressed. The new hockey pitch looked amazing.

Thanks. Getting organised to go to the open days in nov. was planning on seeing Hutchesons and st aloysius too. Have you any insights into either of those?q

They are all excellent schools. I would also look at kelvinside academy and the Glasgow academy. Open days are ok but I would also do a one to one tour on a normal school day to get a real feel if you can find the time. Shop around! I have toured them all, PM me if you need more info!

I toured all of the private schools and eventually chose St.Aloysius. I can't describe it but it has a better feel to it. I'm sure the facilities may be better at other schools but this one for us is the best. My dd started the kindergarten last week and loves it

I know people whose children go to all of these schools, and they're all very happy and doing well.

Personally, the young people I've met (through work and my own DC) who went to St Al's have all been kind, compassionate and smart. While the ones from Glasgow Academy who get on my train are quite rude and arrogant. Just a snapshot, but it would influence me if I was a parent deciding where to send mine.

High School is v v academically selective and doesn't guarantee siblings a place. Junior school is in the suburbs rather than Glasgow itself.
Kelvinside is less academic and has a friendly feel.
Agree with the St Al's comments very nice children but if you are a non Catholic your will need to be ok with a fair amount of Catholic instruction.
Hutchie v good but big and not so easy to get to if you are north of the Clyde.

You may struggle to get into St Al's unless you are from a Catholic background. It's a very good school but VERY heavy on religion. I went to St Al's and then Glasgow Academy for 6th year. They are both very good schools but really depends what you are looking for.

I'd ring up and talk to the rectors at:

St Aloysius
Glasgow Academy
High School
Hutchesons

There are also some very good single sex schools if you are interested in those:

Fernhill
Laurel Park
Craigholme

And for the boys

Belmont House
Erm....

Laurel Park is no longer around. Was taken over by Hutchie some years back. As far as I know Belmont is now co ed I think. Craigholme has a good reputation but very small

If you are planning on living on the south side then Hutchie is your local. Otherwise look at High school, KA or GA as previously mentioned.

Belmont is small & might not offer all the sports your DS might get elsewhere.

Or if you can choose where you settle, you might find that you can get your boys into some of the best state schools in Scotland..

Wouldn't recommend St Aloysius, many unhappy parents have removed their children. they do what they want without consultation with parents

I have 2 children 6 and 10. Looking for independent schools in Glasgow starting from 2023/24. We went to open days , St Aloysius, TGA, HSOG and KA. But I could not make my mind as to which one is the right one for my children. We have not been to Hutchie. Are they as good as the above?

I very much appreciate if parents who have the knowledge/experience about these schools can share with me. I do not know any parents to talk to. We live east side of Glasgow.
