Year8+ - do they need to take everything in the first day?

My daughter mentioned when she goes back in Year 8, she will get her timetable at registration on the first day. Not sure how other schools work, but do others think she should take all her text books, reading book, workbooks and PE kit in (she will also have her violin lesson the first day), they are going to weigh a ton and lockers won't be sorted out for 2/3 weeks.

At my school on the first day back we have no formal lessons so it isn't an issue. I would suggest that she takes in the basic equipment that she takes everyday - pencil case, reading book and maybe a pad of paper so if she does do work she can just stick it in her books later. Not sure about the PE kit - could she just take trainers, shorts and t-shirt so it's not too heavy, but she can still take part if necessary?

I can't speak for all teachers, but I wouldn't punish a student for not having their workbook on the first day, provided they had something to write with.

ours either got new timetable at end of term or they can look on the school website at the end of holidays and the timetables are online.

Does she really have textbooks to take in? Most schools issues new exercise books at the start of a school year.

There would be no harm in ringing the school on the day before school starts to see if she will need her PE kit or not.

At DD's school the first PE lesson of the year is always a sit down and be told loads of stuff, so they don't need their PE kits.
Any chance you know a parent with an older child at the school you can ask?

NoComet · 06/08/2013 15:19

Pencil case, note book possibly. They aren't expected to have everything and never any need for PE kit.

Good idea to have cash for lunch as the queue for topping up cards can be long, but otherwise don't worry.

NoComet · 06/08/2013 15:25

Oh and if on the bus go to the stop a bit early and have your phone, our bus company messes about with times and routes when it gains and looses pick ups.

And make sure you have your pass.

Why on Gods green earth my DDs need bus passes in a dedicated bus in the middle of nowhere, when they are in school uniform I will never know.

It's not a town bus open to people trying to use it without paying.

They wont need pe kit on first day. Or any stuff apart from pencil case and a notebook. Plus anything else specific the school have asked her to take on first day

popperdoodles · 06/08/2013 15:35

At DS school they get given new timetable first day back. DS is going into yr 9, last year he took essential stuff like pencil case and pe kit and that was it. They gave back text books at end of last term and always have new work books for new school year. I would say essential equipment, pe Kit and a note pad is enough.

belief · 06/08/2013 21:52

I never ever took a pe kit in on the first day of school (does anybody?)
Even if PE is scheduled for that day, how many of the other kids will have a PE kit?

creamteas · 06/08/2013 22:26

At my DC's school they start lessons in period 3. If you have PE and no kit you will get a detention......

belief · 06/08/2013 22:28

really creamteas - on day 1?

Either thats harsh or things have changed. When I was at school PE on day 1 meant something less hectic cos no one would have kit.

I stand corrected

hotsummer · 07/08/2013 07:02

No text books for us as they are available electronically or paper versions given out in class (not taken home), however we received a letter advising take PE kit & be ready for all lessons.

Older DC at different school, experience is not likely to need much on day 1 but will send it in anyway. They get new books each year so just pencil case, reading book, science overall, PE kit etc.

Thanks for your replies. Have since found out that they get a new timetable posted on the website about a week before they go back - I guess their tutor hadn't told them as she is reasonably new to the school and may not have known.

My daughter had to do PE in Year 7 on her first day, so I know she's at a school that get straight down to it. Unfortunately, they have some nice chunky text books which the school like them to keep at home (guess they hope they may look at them - haha!). Anyway, at least she'll know exactly what she needs to take now for the first day, especially as she knows they have lessons as normal straight after registration.
