What Stationary Bits will my Son need for year 7?

Seems a long time since I had to buy for myself!!!! I have hit a brick wall. Its so worrying this year 7 stuff!

Pen, pencils, colour pencils, ruler, scissors, glue stick - that's what ds needed for Y7 plus compass, protractor etc but not immediately

At ds's school everything is written in school-provided exercise books so they don't need paper and folders etc until later

Have the school not given you a list?

My niece needed loads of sticky back plastic, they had to cover all their books.

I would buy the Casio fx 83/85 calculator, the one you can get I most supermarkets, they come in black, blue, Pi and for the first time this year white. It is well made and will last until the end of gcses in terms of it's functions. Most supermarkets include it in their back to school offers when they do those.

But a cheap geometry set, but keep it at home. A long ruler is not necessary for most of the time, either buy a 15cm one if your kid has a small pencil case, or a folding one, long ones get post as they don't fit in pencil cases.

Identify everything, but doesn't need to be as e,harassing as a name on things like pens and pencils, a blob of nail varnish will do!

Have plenty of spares at home, e.g. Pens, pencils, but just a couple at a time to take to school!

Add to the other suggestions with memory stick and dictionaries.

Get calculator, dictionaries through school they will be able to buy them much more cheaply.Glue stick is a must, plus all the normal pen, pencils,coloured pencils rulers .Lots of spares.Probably won't need a memory stick as there will be a portal to get onto his school files from home.

Oh and brown paper for covering textbooks

DCs school sold us their ideal pencil case fully set up and calculator at the July induction evening when they met their tutors

DS is in y8 & gets by with:

Clunky calculator (big button ones are popular, only need very basic functions at this point)
1 pencil
1 pen (occasional inconsistent demands about what sort)
a protractor with ruler side.

We were sent a list. Got it all sorted yesterday infact.

We have:
Pencil case
Pencils
Coloured pencils
Eraser
Ink pen and cartridges or roller ball pen
Scissors
Glue stuck
A4 wallet
A4 ring binder

For art:
Set of drawing pencils - HB, 2B, 4B
Set of coloured pencils
Eraser
Pencil sharpener
Black Niro
Black water soluble fine line pen
Ruler

For maths:
Scientific calculator
Ruler
Protractor
Pair of compasses
Set square

For languages:
Ear phones

Just make sure he turns up with a ruddy pen - I am sick to death of pupils arriving at my lessons without a pen. God knows how they think they'll get by without having something to write with!

Ds's list for last year similar to Hulababy's plus memory stick plus dictionaries for both MFLs.

I would inclined to think that if they haven't provided a list, they're likely to be less fussy (not as worried about both HB and 2B pencils for art for a start!)

Scientific calculator would normally be used from year 7 in top sets for maths, I would have thought...

It's the one I recommend, I am a Head of Maths! I buy it in pink as the boys as less likely to steal mine if they are pink!

Do secondary school children write mostly in pen or pencil??! If pen-are biros ok or to be avoided? Any pen recommendations??

Pen for everything except for labelling diagrams which could be done in pencil in some schools. Drawing lines to label diagrams should be done in pencil.

If schools don't specify type of pen, then they probably don't mind.

Ds (and most of his mates - and many of the dc at my school) use Pilot Frixion pens - they're erasable, so ideal for perfectionists like ds. But I have an idea in the back of my head that they may not be allowed in external exams so I need to find that out and phase them out if so. They are also very expensive but very much worth it for ds, who loves to be able to correct mistakes and he can write beautifully with them too.

Ds asked for a scientific calc for his birthday in year 5 (bit of a maths geek) and my dm bought him the most expensive one she could find because it had 297 functions and the cheaper one only had 263 or something...little bit of overkill there!

School have done an Art Pack for £12.50. So all art type stuff is sorted.

I have pens, pencils, (69p ones from sainsburys!) Rubber, ruler, maths set, pencilc case 30cm ruler.

Today I ordered Calulator, highlighters and sticky black plastic for his books.

DS1 has Poor Auditory Memory So I expect this will all be lost within the first week!

I have copied Hulababy's list though to get the rest. Thank you. Making me feel old having a boy starting Secondary School!

DONT give him all the pens at once.

TWO only ever,

and dont give the maths set till he needs it in maths

DO NOT EVER give named pencils at secondary.

I plan on having lots of spares. Tbh its the uniform Im worried about. I bought two jumpers, two polos and rugby shirt for him in the first lot and that cost me close to £100. If he keeps losing that I wont be happy!

By named pencils, do you mean with his name on? lol I can still name his uniform cant I.

I imagine Hulababy's list is just about right for DS's schools its number one school in Wales :)

DS1 has a USB stick on list as well.
