This is a major bone of contention just now in parts of Scotland since some local authorities are only allowing kids to study 6 examinable subjects, instead of 8 offered under the old system. In other parts of the country, however, kids can study 7 or even 8. The Minister for Learning, Alasdair Allan, says there should be 'latitude in every school' to allow for up to 8 but this isn't happening and the government just say it's in the hands of the local authorities and refuse to intervene.
