My dd would like to learn Greek and I am looking for a beginner's course book. Could you tell me which book your dc are working with?

I'd appreciate any recommendations. Local booksinvolve translation into Czech and it would be easier for dd to have a book based around English translations (or possibly German)..

She's 12, learns Latin so has some idea of grammar. She likes books with childish appeal but I haven't found anything like that for Greek.

Kristian Waite is probably the author to look for. He teaches ds and most of the books have been written inhouse. This is the latest one published I think, but there is also a separate answer book.

The best book I have found is from Galore Park. An Introduction to Classical Greek by Kristian Waite. Really well laid out, clearly explained. My DS is enjoying it at home with me before he starts Greek at school next year.

John Taylor - Greek to GCSE part 1. My sons teacher swears by it.

Yes, that one is very good too and once you have worked through those two you can get some online freebies that are about 100 years old and much more complicated consequently but really good on Textkit.

From what I have read that book seems to have a straight-forward approach which I like but dd might need more exercises than the book offers and at 12, I think the text might move move too fast for her. I would like to see a text sample really to get a better idea of it. It is quite difficult to compare these textbooks when you cannot take them in hand and compare chapters.

Did your ds start working with the book aged 14 booksteen?

Ds used the John Taylor book mentioned by booksteen.

I think the Galore Park book would be easier to teach from (seeing as how I will probably have to do it that is a major consideration). Perhaps the book from John Taylor to follow on from that. Although by then I hope I will have someone else to do it.

Idrtherbemucking about, do you know which text book your ds will be using when he starts school? Will it be Reading Greek?

My DS started Greek back in September when he moved up to 'big' school. They use the John Taylor 'Greek to GCSE'.

I don't know which book he will do at school but they use the Galore Park books for Latin so I am expecting it to be the Galore Park one for Greek too. I had only done Latin myself and have been teaching myself Greek and really enjoying it. I am on the Textkit book for so called beginners in the lower forms of secondary schools back in about 1908 and it is MUCH harder with a much bigger vocab and includes the dual of the nouns which I had never met before. I know there is a Part Two to the Greek GCSE book so maybe it is in there. But I am persevering and loving it.
There are loads to choose from on Textkit and are totally free to download, some with a key as well so you get the answers! So far I think I have done okay without the answers but I foresee a time coming when I will need them.

Thanks. I've never heard of Textkit. Sounds good. I will have to look it up. I find I often prepare much older books, they are somehow clearer and just get to the point - which I feel I need. Dd has learnt Latin with Galore Park and that went well so I presume the Waite book would work well for her. From what I saw of the sample chapter online, it seemed quite straight-forward.

Well done teaching yourself Greek at the same time as teaching ds! I find that quite impressive.
