Wanted to share some good news about DD's maths

I've posted many times before about DD1's struggle with maths; well, she has had tests recently and managed a few marks short of a 5b! I know that's pretty mediocre to a lot of parents of maths whizz-kids but for her it is HUGE and I am so proud of her and she went off this morning to a day that includes a maths lesson with a spring in her step.

That's great Iam. DS1 (13) has struggled with Maths and I know what it's like. I don't think it's ever going to be his favourite subject and homework can be a struggle but he seems to be losing 'the fear'.

It was as if he had decided he wouldn't understand it before he had seen the question Iam. He has just had a maths test which he thinks he's ballsed up but if he has it's because he gets himself into a state over the test, rather than anything else.

I am no Maths genius which doesn't help. I have just had a book from Amazon to help him.

Sparkling that is a perfect description of my DS too! When I tried to help him with homework he would convince himself before we even started that he wasn't going to be able to do it, and that belief just gets in the way of everything.

I don't think maths is necessarily hard to understand, but it is difficult to teach. You can explain the theory and some people will see it straight away and some people won't.

I agree that removing the fear is the first big step; I just kept saying to him - just because you don't understand it from the start, that doesn't mean that you never will, you just have to keep at it. Thanks to a great new teacher I think that he is finally beginning to get it.
