DD had her interview today

she's a bit upset that she didn't know why David Cameron was in Yorkshire this week (High speed railway) and it threw her for the next question which was what does she think of the high speed rail link?
she waffled (from what told me) but then came out with it would be good for people that worked in london but didn't live their or businesses going down for meetings etc but it would also be bad because of all the building work and the noise of the train for the people that live on the route

she's in full on panic mode that she has blown it

please reassure me or let us down gently

I'm pretty up to date with current affairs and I didn't know (or care) that DC was in Yorkshire this week. I suspect most children wouldn't know. Her answer re people working in London but not living there an the impact seem perfectly reasonable to me.
I always thing its better not to analyse these things after the event and it was only one question.

Gosh I would have no idea as to why DC was in Yorkshire today either despite having an interest in HS2.

Its not all about giving the right or wrong answer its how you reply , thinking on your feet.

Hopefully the wait wont be too long and you'll know one way or another very soon.

Was this for an 11+ interview? Would any 10 year old know the answer to these questions?

I wouldn't worry, to be honest, most of the DCs would have struggled on those.

Are our children supposed to be religiously watching and absorving the morning news on tv while eating their cereal, or are they supposed to have a normal childhood? Gosh.

Maybe the school didn't expect your DC to know the answer and the test was to see how a child deals with not knowing the answer to something.

Think of it as Kobyashi Maru for the kids (Star Trek) :)

sausagesandwich DD ended up in a conversation about whether North Korea should be allowed nuclear weapons, she argued they should as long as America have them She got in. In another interview they got shown postcards of places and asked what they thought. I doubt there are wrong or right answers it is just to start a discussion to get to know them better, they know they are 11. Sounds like she gave a good answer. Of course it could be to make sure she knew Yorkshire is God's own country and that any move to make it centre of the universe is a good thing!

DD didn't tell us if she'd been asked any current affairs questions, will ask her later. We're also in Yorkshire but her interview was before the David Cameron visit.

The interviewer did ask her if her younger brother was of the sweet or annoying variety

sausage I think she gave a good answer. Shows that she could think of both positives and negatives - that's objective thinking on her feet. Great sign.

DS loves current affairs and reads all the papers - knew all about the train but when asked at interview today what story had caught his eye mentioned something silly about mafia bosses getting arrested in a restaurant so didn't exactly show off his knowledge of the world. Ah well.

As someone who knows way too much about HS2, I think she summed it up rather well! Suspect the main good thing is she was able to recover and analyse the topic, even though she didn't know the answer to the intro question.
