Excluded in assembly

I was quite shocked when DD told me this...

Two boys (unknown crime) were told to stand up in assembly, had to go to the front where they were shouted at by the very angry Head Teacher. One boy sniggered and was then told he was excluded. Is this normal? Surely there must be better ways of handling it.

DD found the level of shouting and aggression from the Head Teacher pretty scarey tbh.

Shouting should not happen (although I understand why it does), but apart from that I think a lot more information would need to be available before deciding if it was reasonable or not.

As it was other children involved, you will probably never know. Your DD may hear more details in rumours, but it is unlikely to be the whole story.

Sounds reasonable enough to me. I'm sure the Head Teacher had good reason to shout at them.

Perhaps they are known offenders, perhaps they had already been warned of consequences before, perhaps they were being disrespectful. Actually, they were being disrespectful if one of them sniggered at being told off.

Hopefully a lot of other students found it scarey too and will think twice about mucking about in an assembly.

The exclusion must be unlawful. The guidance is clear that exclusion has to be a last resort and only after a full investigation. Clearly this head didn't investigate at all.

Maybe it was an internal exclusion?

Actually it must have been internal. They wouldn't be in assembly if they had been excluded.

Clearly the head was pissed off for being interrupted by a couple of badly behaved boys, which was then made worse by them laughing.

I would imagine they were excluded from the assembly, not excluded from school.

It sounds to me like the boys had done something serious. Were called up to the front to be made an example of and to be told they were excluded and then one giggled.

It sounds a little old fashioned but there is nothing wrong with that. The constant pandering to bad behaviour and Heads who don't want to upset their pupils has created a small section of the student population who believe they are untouchable. Some would think twice if this sort of thing happened more regularly in schools.

When I was at school the head used to cane boys on the stage in assembly in front of the whole school. Mind you, that was in the fifties!
