laziness in year 8

Ds2 Who is a bright boy, not a genius seems to be doing the bare minimum to get by this year. Homework he has just done. Guide lime to complete 2_3 hours. He has done one paragraph in 10 minutes and thinks that will do. Maths book is covered in comments about not trying. At his school they will be set at the end of this year so he is in mixed ability classes for everything except maths. . What to do. .BTW is was his choice to do the homework at half term. Lots of parents of older kids at this school say staff are very helpful with those who try but don't waste there time with those who dont

I am havin exactly the same problem with my dc who's just gone into year 7 so will watch this thread with interest!

I'm really feeling I want to get as much info into my ds before he no longer listens! I find the car good for chats rather than direct conversations. I have told him we love him & want the best life for him that he can have. Education & qualifications mean more choice & that we will help him all we can but ultimately it's his life & up to him. Chats about what can happen when teens make 'bad' choices from newspaper stories etc. What can happen when bright children don't apply themselves & end up with a job they don't enjoy, going back to studying can be hard & expensive later in life. I realise life is not this black & white btw but keep it simple to get the message that I want across. I find 'grown up conversations' go down far better than nagging & hair tearing, I can see him glaze over & mentally putting his fingers in his ears!
