Help with homework

Hi - new to this site so hope I am doing this right! My son just started secondary school and he is not happy. Struggling with all aspects particularly homework (or homestudy as they now call it). I would like to get him some help in some form but not sure where to look. I have looked into tutors but they generally specialise in specific subjects and I would like a generalist who could help maybe 2 hours a week with any subject he needs help with. Does this sort of person exist?? I live in Farnham, Surrey. Thanks.

Yes, they exist, I'm not sure what to advise about findingone though, as the best recommendation tends to be word of mouth. Is there a university near you? Could be the sort of job that might interest a student, especially if they get a reference out of it, or something to add to thei CV.Otherwise try looking in small ads, etc. There may be companies near you that employ a range of tutors, and might have tutors that could fullfill that roll

Why is he struggling? Is work too hard or is lots being set?

Combination - he has never particularly enjoyed school (he's more of a doer than a thinker). I personally think he is getting too much for his ability and feel like we are rushing to meet deadlines which is affecting the quality of what he is producing. The homework being set, I feel, is beyond what he is capable of doing by himself which is putting pressure on me to help more than I am able to. Difficult one!

I would talk to the school about this. Is he in the wrong set/stream? If the classes he is in are moving too fast for him this could be making the homework difficult.

Has he got a HW timetable? It would enable you to plan better.
