Year 7 - how much stuff has your DC lost so far?

DD lost a blouse, a set of pens and a lunch box within the first week. This morning she can't find her entire PE kit that she took to school yesterday, she says it could have been left on the bus or at school. No lockers at school and nowhere to leave anything. It's driving me mad.

If she doesn't find the kit it will cost about £70 to replace. I've told her I'm not just going to go out and buy a new one and she has gone off in tears with a pair of knackered old trainers that don't fit and plain shorts and t shirts without school logo which she can wear for a few weeks while she saves up. Harsh or a lesson to learn?

And breathe ....... so cross at how careless she is and how she doesn't seem to give a flying fig!

I should add that she's very sporty and is doing trials for various teams at the moment which probably means that she won't do well with too small trainers and the schools will possibly not pick her as she isn't in correct uniform

In the first term of year 7 my DS lost a bag, a pencil case, a calculator, a coat, a pair of football boots, a set of house keys and an oyster card.

And he had to replace those things himself.

I agree they should pay for it, too easy for them if we just replace it.

Given what you say about trials I'd replace it once-if she's that sporty surely you'll need more than one kit. .. would never send child out in too small shoes unless I couldn't't replace them financially-think that's just mean tbh

My tough year 7 boy was in floods of tears this morning because he left his blazer and tie in the changing rooms yesterday. We went in together early and a very lovely PE teacher was there and she found them for him- and he burst into tears again. She gave him a cuddle- lovely to know they can still be kind even at secondary school.

OP- reading what you said about trials, I think you're being a bit harsh. I'd agree if it was just ordinary PE - but I wouldn't risk her not being picked for a team.

Oh seeker that is lovely. DS1 would have cried then had a sleepless night until he found them again and he's Year 9.

DS1 has (tempts fate) lost nothing yet.

My year 7 dd cried when she lost her English folder with her homework in, she never loses anything

I went to the bus lost propery with her and when it was there she started crying again and the woman at the lost property gave her a hug and a quality street.

DS2 came home without his £30 coat yesterday. He may have left it in M3. Or H4. Or in his Tutor room......

I knew summink was amiss when I got in at 6.30pm last night and found DH, DS1 and DS2 all quietly in separate rooms... DS1 was quick to 'dob' DS2, but it appears that DH 'went off on one' about it. He is unable to differentiate minor irritations from major catastrophes at the best of times in terms of reaction, so this had him in a tail spin. This effectively removes my opportunity for some 'life learning' to take place, like a) a bit of a lecture about leaving stuff around in secondary school, and b) an action plan to attempt to retrieve it, as a) will cause DS2 to burst into tears thus he won't hear any of b); but b) without a) only teaches that it's all OK, Mummy Will Sort it Out.

One lunch box - left on train as she gathered up four other bags/hockey sticks and miscellaneous junk. Too expensive to get from lost property, as we'd have to go to a central London station two hours away (£20 train ticket), and pay £3 admin fee.

One pair shorts - vanished from her PE bag. As I suspect they were 'borrowed' they may eventually rematerialise in lost property.

LitenTree -Sympathies re your DH's handling of it.

DS has lost his geometry set - much bombastic lecturing at length by DP about how DS will have to pay to replace it...when DS was never imagining anything different.

It is ridiculous to have no lockers.
My dd is in year 10. Today she has to carry about an enormous A3 English folder that doesn't fit in her bag, her art folder, again won't fit in the bag, her PE kit, trainers and football boots for after school football club.

Although I did suggest she may need a bigger bag and was given the "look of disgust and disdain" that only 14 year old girls can do so effectively.

I was so outraged about the absence of lockers I thought about asking the PTA to consider buying some. Then I found out how much they cost..........

Touch wood, nothing so far!! but our new High School kids are older up here. My P7 however has managed to lose 2 right handed ski gloves in the last 3 weeks!!

They took the lockers out at DS1's previous school as there wasn't enough room for them.

At his new school he has a locker and it has made things so much easier for him.

DS (yr 10) has a locker.

Sadly it's only big enough for one of his trainers at a time.

I suspect an art folder wouldn't fit in there, somehow.

My son has no locker as he forgot to give me the note to apply for one and there are none left. His problem now.

Otherwise not too bad. The bus pass is the thing I will be if he loses, all £52 per month of it...

Lockers temporarily removed from DS's school as it is one of the schools salvaged at the last minute from the schools buildings programme, and the building works mean no locker space. they will be re-instated next year, I hope.

We have lockers, but the school is on a big campus (1400 DC) so the locker is frequently miles away, and as they appear to need to have all their PE kit in school at once, the locker is full of that. I wish they had pegs as well but I do get that they're theft magnets. I don't quite understand what a DC is supposed to do with a sopping wet raincoat all day when they have to carry it around with them- thus no one older than Y7 wears a coat to school at all, come rain, shine or snow.

Guess that solves the 'losing it' problem !

On day 3 my DS lost his £30 rugby top. I went crazy and had words with him and the next day he brought it home which was great, until I went to wash it at the weekend. He had found not his own top but some huge XXL sized rugby top that was dirty and smelly and looked like a dress on him. He had actually worn the top for PE that week even though it was past his knees. He looked ridiculas but said that nobody had said anything to him, not even the PE teacher. It was so funny.

I looked in lost property and there was his top. The giant rugby 'dress' was left in there.

Shouldn't he have been the one to go to lost prop though?

No, I'd go to lost property myself if a £30 coat or rugby shirt was at stake, thanks, especially considering that some parents regard the LP as a version of Freecycle...
