Do your children take a coat to comp/grammar in winter?

There are no pegs are my daughter's new comprehensive so they have to carry coats around with them all day if they take one. Many Mums I know aren't going to buy a coat for going over blazers for this reason and I just wondered what others do. I know she won't need a coat most of the time, but when it's really cold or pouring with rain I feel she'll need one, if only a lightweight/waterproof one that fits over her blazer.

tbh even if you buy her one she won't wear it, teens and coats don't go

Mabelface · 10/09/2012 12:18

Buy her one, but let her have major imput on choosing it.

Teens don't wear coats. You will be wasting your money buying one, IME

BackforGood · 10/09/2012 12:26

My dd wears a coat (well, did in Yr7 and 8.. we'll see this year) but my ds hasn't worn a coat for 99% of his secondary life. You might find the girls have an umbrella in their bags for the rain - they don't like getting their hair wet in general.

imnotmymum · 10/09/2012 12:28

It has to be the right coat of course. Presently it is Superdry in our DDs school and they would have gone without unless they had one!!

modifiedmum · 10/09/2012 12:32

I always used to bring a coat to school! As did other kids! times have changed lol! I would say get one but like the others say, let her choose.

BackforGood · 10/09/2012 12:36

None of dd's group wear anything like that. dd's is a Next one which I bought in a charity shop for me, and she pinched just a plain black wool mix, bum length coat with a hood. Her friends all seem to have similar ones.

imnotmymum · 10/09/2012 13:16

Oh it has to be Superdry or Paul's Boutiques and a BlackBerry...

under duress

mumblechum1 · 10/09/2012 13:18

No because they have so much stuff to drag around all day; backpack, games kit, orchestra instrument etc there's no way they can be bothered with a coat as well.

Skivvytomany · 10/09/2012 13:26

Most of them do wear jackets here, virtually all of them have superdry. But it is sunny Scotland so they get a bit cold and wet if they don't wear one. They don't have blazers at their school though.

TheOriginalNutcracker · 10/09/2012 13:28

Mine will wear gloves and a scarf but thats it Hmm

As you have said though, the school has no coat hooks, and also insist on a black, no logo coat, which neither of mine will wear.

imnotmymum · 10/09/2012 13:35

We do not have blazers either though so perhaps that makes the difference of coat or not to coat.

catwoo · 10/09/2012 14:16

My boys 17 and 14 really do not want to take coats no matter how cold it is. They have a long rural journey on a bus that is prone to breaking down, getting stuck on tight bends etc. So when it is VERY cold (like the winter before last) i do make them take one because to be e stranded in temperatures of -10 degrees in just a blazer would be foolhardy.

catwoo · 10/09/2012 14:16

Out of school they will wear a coat though

shrimponastick · 10/09/2012 14:19

No coat for DS - not since he started grammar. He is now in Year 10.

They do wear a blazer though.

He says there is nowhere to store a coat, he could put itin his locker but the lockers are sometimes a distance away from his last classroom - and time is tight for catching the bus.

In winter - snow/ice etc he will wear a long sleeved thermal tshirt underneath his shirt. ? Won't wear the (optional) school jumper either - says they are for girls and nerds ??

I see very few high school kids around here wearing a coat.

Startailoforangeandgold · 10/09/2012 14:31

Only if it's absolutely freezing and then it vanished for 3 months.

Reappeared in tutorialConfused has her name in inch high letters. Never found out where it had been. Certainly not official lost property, that happens to be one of her librarian jobs.

IloveJudgeJudy · 10/09/2012 17:52

No coat for DS1 until Y12. DD does wear a coat when it's exceptionally cold - bum length with hood, but she does have to carry it around all day.

DS2 won't wear a coat, either. I'm lucky if he'll even wear a jumper under his blazer, unless it's really hot!

I agree with getting her to choose her own coat as whatever you choose, even if she really does like it, she won't agree that she does.

KitKatGirl1 · 10/09/2012 22:45

Depends on the school. The boys all wear coats in the winter at our school; the girls are less likely to, but many do.
