School coats....

DS is starting Y7 in a week (argh!) and I was wondering what to do about a school coat. He's already at the age when he groans at the thought of putting a coat on when it's wet. Do your DC wear coats to school?

Also, he'll be wearing a school blazer. At this stage of the year, I'm thinking more of a waterproof coat than one for warmth. I'm guessing that I'll have to get a larger size than normal to fit over his blazer??

Please help, thanks! Grin

secondary school students would rather get soaking wet and freeze to death before wearing a coat! I would wait a bit and see what everyone else is wearing (a bit like the bag situation!) before spending any money

TheOriginalSteamingNit · 29/08/2012 19:08

He won't wear one until it snows and possibly not then! Save your pennies just yet....

My teens have this.

It doesn't have a school logo so fine for wearing outside school.

It is adjustable with strings and Velcro tabs, so one coat can do for several years.

Yep, wait and see!

DS1 will be Yr11 and DS2 will be Yr8 next week.

They wear Superdry Polar coats.

our high school they have a school coat which they wear in year 7&8 and then again in year 11 very odd

year 9&10 are far too cool for coats!

LadySybildeChocolate · 29/08/2012 19:16

Mine won't wear one, he complains that his teachers tell him off and he doesn't have the time to put it into his locker. He's not outside for very long though, and he'll wear a thermal vest under his shirt with his blazer so I suppose that's something.

BringBack1996 · 29/08/2012 19:43

Generally coats seem to be okay as long as they aren't actually waterproof Hmm

norahjonesisnotmyname · 30/08/2012 20:30

My son (yr 9) won't wear a coat to school, he does have a school fleece which he wears to and from school when the weather gets cold.

nokidshere · 30/08/2012 22:59

I'm with the "save your money"!!!

It is very very uncool to wear a coat - being freezing cold and dripping wet apparantly isn't!

Although the added fact that there are no lockers and they have to carry it round with them all day might have something to do with it lol

Dominodonkey · 30/08/2012 23:56

I disagree with most other posters. Nearly all Year 7s and many year 8s wear coats at my school. They wear them in the playground too. Most wear sporty style ones. The majority of ones who don't are from 'difficult' homes.

SomePeopleSayImBonkers · 31/08/2012 11:22

Thank you for all your comments.

I'm inclined to hold off buying a new one for a bit. DS has a perfectly good waterproof and his winter coat from last year still fits him, so if he does wear one, he could wear that for now.

He will have a locker (well, we've paid for one!)

So, what do most children do...if they wear a coat? Blazer in bag, coat on...put coat in locker and wear blazer during school time? Or coat over blazer?

It really depends where you live and how wet it is... north south divide and all that...

Mine have very light black North face Goretex jackets as where we live it is incredibly wet four days a week and three miles from school. These were bought a size bigger so they go over the blazers and are also suitable for Duke of Edinburgh activity.

They are stuffed in their bags or in locker depending on how wet it's been. They are portable and dry pretty fast. They are packable and meant to be stuffed and weigh about 500g.

Looking at the bus stop (30 kids) I'd say only 10% go without coats on a miserable day.

The 10%- and its mostly the younger ones in Y7,8,9 who don't wear coats - take umbrellas (girls) and the boys are happy to get soaked.

However eventually as they progress up the school coat wearing increases to about 100%. The older girls are fed up arriving at school with their hair plastered to their heads and mascara running south towards their chin so so they relent and get a coat but not a black one

foxinsocks · 31/08/2012 11:56

Mine don't wear coats

I have given up. They are old enough to understand what being cold means.

HSMM · 31/08/2012 11:59

DD has asked for thermal underwear in the snow, but won't wear a coat. She says they are too much hassle in the classroom and she doesn't have time to get to her locker before catching her bus.

foxinsocks · 31/08/2012 12:00

Yes mine have to put them in lockers, lockers not in a useful place and have bags in lockers etc etc

foxinsocks · 31/08/2012 12:02

A lot of their friends with more strict parents do wear coats though

Depends what your kids are like and how strongly you feel about it

OhYouGreatGreatBritain · 31/08/2012 12:05

dd tries to get away without a coat and wears a jumper under her blazer and takes an umbrella instead. Its mostly because she doesnt have much time at the end of the school day to get to her locker, it doesnt fit into her bag with her billions of books (why does she have so many when everyone else gets away with so few???) and they arent allowed to carry their coats.
