Confused looking at exam results - help please!

manticlimactic · 23/08/2012 22:00

Have been looking at the sheet DD got for her results and I'm all confused.

There is no where on it that tells me what the exam marks were 'out of' IYKWIM. Is the column headed 'mark' the same as the Mark on the AQA website?

She got a predicted grade of A/B for English Language. But these are her results:

AQA GCSE/B Eng03 74(mark) C (equiv)
AQA GCSE/B Eng1H 56 E
AQA GCSE/FC English D 167 (now I know this is an average of those above I presume)

AQA GCSE/B Eng02 0X

Now I've looked up the 0X and it means all or part of the exam was not taken but she did all her exams and her controlled assessment so what does that mean?

She needed maths or English for her course but they are insisting on English grade C or above Sad or maths (she got a D - she's not good at maths even though she revised revised revised ). She's been in tears all day because she thought she'd done so well in English.

I'm not too sure what the 0X means but 74 + 56 = 130 so where did the extra 37 UMS come from? I'm assuming from unit 2 I hope I'm wrong and your DD has got the all important C grade.

clam · 23/08/2012 23:32

My ds did AQA and has similar codes to those and I'm just looking at his sheet and trying to see a comparison. For a start, he has 8 things listed to your 4, although some of them are amalgamated totals, such as the FC ones (one for Eng Language, one for literature). Above those are the individual paper scores - 3 for language (units 1, 2 and 3) and 3 for Literature (Units 1H, 4H and 5 - might they be depending what texts they studied?)
The FC ones (he has two) are the totals, one for literature, one for language.

I think you're going to have to contact the school asap, and ask for clarification here. Sounds like there are some missing scores, which might explain the 0X? There should be staff in tomorrow - there will be many students needing to discuss altered A level options.

Not sure if I'm much help, sorry! Good luck.

loveisalaserquest · 23/08/2012 23:50

clam, it sounds as though your ds did Lit and Lang separately - OP's dd has done English, which is just one GCSE rather than two.

OP, it definitely seems as if one module hasn't been submitted, for whatever reason (although I agree - the maths seems a bit suspect!) Tell your dd not to panic at this point, and ring school in the morning.

loveisalaserquest · 23/08/2012 23:55

If you look at the thread in this topic called "Any teachers around - AQA English GCSE" (am on phone so can't link), there is a list there of what each module is out of, and also a useful link to the AQA site.

By the way, the marks you have are UMS points rather than actual marks. So a pupil might get x out of y marks on a paper, which equates to a certain number of UMS points (out of 300, total), which corresponds to a particular grade. I'm not sure if that's helpful or more confusing, sorry!

bruffin · 24/08/2012 01:01

Here is the link from my thread

manticlimactic · 24/08/2012 06:57

Thanks for the replies - I went to bed, it had been an exhausting evening !

I had been trying to work out what UMS is and couldn't find anything in plain English that I could understand. Grin

Will have a look at your link bruffin and also ring the school, which I was planning on doing, as I am concerned about the 0x but just wanted a bit of info before I did.

Ok the marks are UMS. So ENG02 is speaking and listening - even if she had done that and did appallingly she should have got some mark, no?

Can anyone link to the grade boundaries for Maths please for edexl. And should I see a mark for this grade on the results sheet. It just says Mathematics A (linear) D (34 points) no mark to compare.

Zippylovesgeorge · 24/08/2012 07:37

manticlimactic - mine did Edexcel Maths A (Linear) too - there is no mark just the grade on his paper too.

manticlimactic · 24/08/2012 07:40

It's odd isn't it Zippy? Why no mark?

Anyway I've got to get to work and will attempt to ring them in my lunch half hour.

www.edexcel.com/iwantto/I%20want%20to%20%20Tasks/1206%20GCSE%20Unit%20UMS%20Boundaries.pdf

That gives you the modular maths and something called methods in maths.

Hope school can shed some light as to why no grade for Unit 2.

magentadreamer · 24/08/2012 07:44

Sorry I didn't read your post properly, will hunt for linear.

manticlimactic · 24/08/2012 18:05

Thanks for the links. I've just finished a 11 hour shift so will look at them over a cuppa Grin

I found out about the X mark on unit 2. Apparently she did that module last year (y10) and took the exam. She got a C so they didn't get her to sit this year. I'm not pleased - she may have got a B, as she has come along way in speaking and listening, which would have bumped her overall grade up. Angry

Hi, my DS has a very similar printout for his English results/

Your DD's total mark is 167 (out of 300), and the GCSE/FC means the Full Course mark. She got a D grade. The pass mark was 180.

There's a whole lot of discussion about the English grades this year - I know in my DS's school, most of the students got one grade lower than predicted.

catwoo · 24/08/2012 23:47

You definitely need to chase up why there is a module mark missing. It sounds as though there has been a cock up somewhere along the line.Your poor DD Sad

manticlimactic · 28/08/2012 06:20

I'm going up to the school later on. My DD was at her dads when the results were collected and now she's home we've gone through which module is which.

The ENG1H is the Non Fiction text which DD says includes her controlled assessment for 'Of Mice and Men' and whatever went with it . She says the teacher showed her her grade for that and she got a C. So she's querying the E.

I need to know what I'm talking about when I go up there so could someone please explain how much of the E grade is controlled assessment and how much is exam based?

OP posts:
magentadreamer · 28/08/2012 10:13

Mantic I've just looked at the AQA spec for GCSE English Lang Unit 1 is an exam Your DD's CA about of mice and men would have been Unit 3

manticlimactic · 30/08/2012 23:35

Thanks Magenta. Found hat out when we got to school. All sorted no. The E grade is getting remarked as she got the same mark for last year and she choked on the YR10 exam and hardly answered anything and this year she wrote loads which the Vice Principal thought was odd and the school is contesting the banding anyway.

BUT...she got onto the course she wanted Grin.

OP posts:
magentadreamer · 31/08/2012 08:35

Thats good news regarding getting on to her course and hopefully a remark will bump up her grade.
