What is 'satisfactory progress' over Y8?

I work in primary ed where 2 sub levels progress is classed as 'good' - satisfactory is about 1.5!
Does this work the same over secondary?

Pretty much yes! Normal, average progress is 1 whole level over two years, so 1.5 per year. More than thast would therefore be good, less than that poor.

As you know though children (damn them!) don't tend to acquire learning in a straight line fashion.

I reckon it's more variable, depending on the subject. For instance MFL they start in yr7 on much lower levels but then I think go through them quicker. Whereas something like science, if they start getting assessed at high levels in yr7 it may not leave them scope for levels to climb (that's fine, obviously).

OP, I'm guessing you have a child who has just finished year 8 and are trying to work out if their progress is 'good enough'. We are having this at the moment.

My son's school told me that they expect children to make 1 whole level progress over years 7 and 8.

This means that, if they come in on an expected 4b, they will be on target to achieve the expected level of 5/6 by the end of year 9. If they come in on a 5c, they expect them to be getting a 6c at the end of year 8.

It is different in MFL in year 7 but we found that he'd caught up in those by the end of year 8.

Although to read some of the posts/threads on MN, you'd think that the majority of children are achieving level 7/8s by the end of year 8

Yes Folkgirl my year 8 son has Aspergers - it took a l-o-n-g time for him to settle. I thought his report showed FAB progress but wanted to check before I kill him with totally unwanted kisses!
(2 or 3 sub levels in every subject except PE - he's never going to be sporty!!)
