Our dc are only 5 and 3 but we are moving from New Basford partly to get away from the dreaded school-beginning-with-a D. We have looked at Gedling and Arnold and in fact are in negotiations over a Gedling house but are not certain to get it.

A lovely, within budget house has just come on in Sherwood. We love Sherwood, have friends there, feel we fit in there - a lot more than in Gedling but that may just be baecause we don't know it.

Anyway, the problem is that moving to Sherwood would not take us away from our current (seemingly huge) catchment area which is kind of the point of moving . We know of several people who have teenage dc in Sherwood whose children go to other schools - Redhill, Arnot, Calverton etc and several people have told us, "Oh don't worry, you'll get them in somewhere else, stay here!" etc but not sure how much faith I can put in this.

Before anyone slates me, I am happy to support local schools and want my dc to go to a nice, mixed, community school. The 'D' school has a shocking reputation and, as a teacher, I know of several people who have taught there who have told me awful things about it. I have never met a person with a good word to say about it but, if anyone has positive experiences of it, I would like to hear those too!

Also, any advice from anyone at all would be wonderful as my head is spinning here!

If getting away from an awful school is the main motivation for moving I certainly wouldn't be moving elsewhere within the catchment area for that same awful school, no matter how nice the house was.

Don't know the areas at all but I wouldn't be doing anything with regard to secondary school when your eldest is 5! Think about it in year 4.

You could well move into the catchment of a fab school only to find you wouldnt touch it with a barge pole in 5 years time.
