Ok so one of the topics dd1 has to revise is :production of alkalis by reacting metals with water.

Nothing in either her exercise or text book and can't find owt on google either.

Can anyone help?

I'm not actually sure that's a 'real' topic. Ds is in year 8, if you react metals with water then you'd get hydrogen gas (ds says, and he's a geek).

SoupDragon · 13/06/2012 18:53

Flicking through DS1's Chemistry text book, if you put an alkali metal (sodium, lithium etc into water it produces hydrogen gas and an alkali.

Could it be this?

Try

LadySybildeChocolate · 13/06/2012 18:54

or does she mean this?

choceyes · 13/06/2012 18:58

My husband is a secondary science teacher will ask him in a mo after I have finished feeding dd .

Soupdragon is right according to DH chemist! Sodium/lithium + water is what she needs to look up.

DilysPrice · 13/06/2012 19:09

Don't forget calcium - calcium + 2* water = calcium hydroxide and hydrogen

BrigitBigKnickers · 13/06/2012 19:11

Is this of any use? My DD has just done her end of year 8 tests and this helped her immensely

choceyes · 13/06/2012 19:16

All they need to know
-for a level four that it produces hydrogenand the 'pop' test
-for a level five word equations for the reaction, the result is always metal hydroxide + hydrogen
-for a level six the symbol equation for the reaction is typical e.g.
Na + H2O -> NaOH + H2

Thanks all

We'd done the metals in water hydrogen thingy and love the vid - but agree we think this is a non topic - hoping it doesn't come up
Thanks for advice and reassurance
