Travelling for a year before entry to secondary school

Some time ago, I read an article about a father who had home educated his daughter before she sat the exams (successfully) for a super selective London girls school, and as part of that travelled round Europe etc seeing things in person. Unfortunately I can't find it, but would love to read it again.

Does anyone know what that article was - or have any experiences of doing that kind of thing. As it does seem rather inspiring!

Even if parents can't home ed long term, it's well worth doing so after entrance exams to deidcate the remaining year to a wider educational experience. It's a great start to secondary, for both academic and life skills. Quite easy to do and no down sides if planned ahead. Fantastic for parents, too. We discovered that quite a few people had done that, for varying periods, many from Easter, as that better suited work commitments.
