Looking for a good private tutor

My 15 year old daughter is struggling with her Maths. She's got a mental block with it and I'd really like a tutor who could get the subject across to her in a way she would respond to. Also my 12 year old son is behind with his spelling so I'm really looking for 2 tutors. Other parents I know have given me the names of 2 tutors but how am I to know if they'd be any good to my children? Who's got experience of using private tutors here and how did you go about it? How do you know how good they are and what sorts of things should I look out for? Sorry for being long winded but this is an area I don't know much about and be grateful for any help. Thanks x

The problem is what works for one child doesn't necessarily work for another child. Degrees; BSc's MSc's and even PHd's don't necessarily make you good at putting a subject across to others. We found on the internet a fantastic Latin tutor for my son. We met him and liked him he had an outstanding track record teaching right through to Oxbridge undergraduate level, all students had got A' and the new A*'s etc. We explained the problem and showed him the exam paper my son was due to sit in 6 month time and immediately he grasped the requirements. My husband has Latin A level and he knew straight away that the tutor knew his stuff this man lived breathed ate slept latin!! Then my DS had a lesson and we sort of eve dropped on what was being said by the end of the lesson even I (Im no linguist) and my other latin hating DS wanted to learn Latin! My DS had achieved less than 10% in a mock of the exam paper its was a very difficult entrance exam some of it was AS level (he was 12 at the time) six months later he scored an A which is only given to those who show enormous ability the tutor cried when I told him.
