Hi. I have just received the graded results of my son's entrance exams for Winchester. I have understood A is the best and D the worst, but I have no idea for instance, Bs are ok but Cs are no good and Ds mean he has just scraped in, or all Bs, Cs and even Ds are quite ok? Could anyone give me a clear guidelines? Many thanks.

If your son is a boarder then he's probably not had the same intensity as a day boy, overseas boy or a boy in a London prep. His results may not be as high but I bet a term in and he'll start overtaking the boys who were heavily coached but now have to make it on their own.

Colleger, thank you for your opinion which is a real eye-opener.. My son's present boarding school has always been quite anti-coaching and I had thought it was because of their pride but now I realised there is more to it! I did arrange about 20 hours of coaching last Easter holiday and another 5 hours on the long weekend just before the exams so I can't claim my son is coaching-free, I'm afraid..
