The accomplishment folder sounds like a nice idea

cory · 11/05/2012 15:16

Dd in Yr 10 is still under observation to see how many GCSEs she will be allowed to take, having been off school for the best part of the last 6 months with chronic pain disorder and mh issues. She is a bright girl who would do well at university- if she ever gets well enough to cope. Sad

School very supportive and lovely but I'm worn out, just the enormous struggle of getting her into school, trying to make sure she doesn't start to hyperventilate, doesn't throw up, doesn't put her back out.

hate this system where it's all spread out over two years so you have no chance of catching up later

bruffin · 11/05/2012 15:51

Thats such a shame Cory Sad

I think the problem is, there will always be a yr11 at school every year, so there's always going to be teachers having to cram and guide them into their exams, iyswim!

I guess, we are thinking it should have been done during yrs 8, 9 and 10, because we didn't really notice about Yr11 back then. We weren't living it then and the parents of Yr11's 2 or 3 or 4 years ago, were saying the same as us now.

We're ready. DD is focused and her self dicipline at going to extra classes and picking up revision is brilliant. I'm very proud of her now and I'll be just as proud on 23rd August.

piawill · 11/05/2012 21:12

Hello, any feedback on the Maths IGCSE paper this afternoon? How did they find it? My daughter thought it was quite hard and so did her friends.

daffodilly2 · 11/05/2012 21:22

Who else has to guide the DS to revision every step of the way? I'm glad schools now run revision classes right up to the exams. Keeps them going.

glaurung · 11/05/2012 23:24

The Student Room is usually a good source of post exam discussion if you want a post mortem piawill. But I reckon it's usually better just to forget about it afterwards personally - there's nothing you can do to change things and the potential for getting upset over mistakes is rather high.

piawill · 12/05/2012 08:57

Such useful advice, glaurung but can't help myself. So much effort has gone into this particular exam, and so much is at stake, not least her confidence. Will try and worry less.

bruffin · 12/05/2012 09:27

Know how you feel piawill
I am still drilling Ds to find out how his interview went in April for a scholarship, have been in Student room as well, but we won't know until July.
It's the not knowing that driving me mad even though I know that there is nothing I can do about it

glaurung · 12/05/2012 10:01

I hope it went well piawill it's horrible when you absolutely need a good grade in a subject. And good luck to your ds too bruffin, is that for a sixth form scholarship? By results day in August we may all have gone crazy!

bruffin · 12/05/2012 10:09

Yes its a small 6 th form scholarship for future engineers. They can use it at any school that is affiliated to the scheme, but it looks good on uni application and they get a sponsor which may lead to work experience etc.

bruffin · 12/05/2012 10:12

Results day in august is Dhs birthday, wonder how much we will have to celebrate.

glaurung · 12/05/2012 10:28

fingers crossed then bruffin.

danishpastries · 12/05/2012 11:13

Piawill
The top set at my child"s school found the maths IGCSE on Frid afternoon very tough too, so don't be downhearted.

Gilnahirk · 12/05/2012 16:48

Daffodilly2 - I'm having to do the same as you for my DS1. Produce a timetable for the day, put past papers in fron tof him, try to get him to look at the mark scheme afterwards, etc. If I didn't do it, he'd just end up with lower grades and so I carry on.

Today I've been marking his attempts at French listening papers. The recordings are on the school website and he has the question papers, but he wouldn't bother if I didn't insist.

I too am grateful for the school revision sessions, which carry on until that subject's exams are over. It's the first year the school have done this.

daffodilly2 · 12/05/2012 17:49

Gilnahirk - I'm not alone then. We've being doing Eng. lang. practise today with my DS coming down with a rotten cold. It has been like pulling teeth but he is preparing.

Yesterday, I left a note , all past papers are on ironing board - my DH put a few on table with a pen and text book! Hence the ironing board was done , all else not seen!

Point is we have been organising him for 2 years thru modular process and he has achieved above expected that way - amazing as he had SEN as a small boy! It is hard work, I worry when we do a bit less but I suppose we are modelling the approach needed for further study when he is mature enough to understand. My DS is still only 15.

Well done mums who keep going! Smile [sceptical] the grimace is it is hard work.

daffodilly2 · 12/05/2012 17:50

Confused Here's the grimace!!!

cardibach · 12/05/2012 22:12

Last lap now. DD has French and Music on Monday, then lots for just over two weeks then a gap and finishes with Maths on 11th and 13th June. I am psycho-bitch-nagging-mum-from-hell but she is taking it well. She is attending all revision classes offered at school. I feel she is as ready as can be expected! Have booked us a weekend at a spa hotel when it is all over to relax - I can't wait.

BringBack1996 · 12/05/2012 22:18

Very jealous of your spa weekend!

Not that DS isn't at school he seems to have forgotten all about revision and didn't get out bed today until 2pm Hmm

He's got sports commitments tomorrow but on monday I am cracking down on the revision!

Kez100 · 12/05/2012 22:41

Yes, French and RE this week here. Plus in-school completion of her ICT National units and whole day English revision one day, not sure which. It's cranking up!

IdontknowwhyIcare · 13/05/2012 03:42

Grin at cardibach. Bet ds wishes he was in your house. I've decided the last 2 weeks after the exams he can do all the cooking cleaning ironing, in prep for uni. Yes I know it's still 2 more years but practice makes perfect.

empirestateofmind · 13/05/2012 04:14

11am here and DD is still in bed (despite my nagging). She has French tomorrow and biology and geography on Tuesday.

luckylavender · 13/05/2012 10:28

Ds has French tomorrow but is in school today (Sunday)for an English revision session!

Rezolution · 13/05/2012 10:36

empire At least your DD isn't over-anxious. Can you tempt her out of bed with food and drink? Time is ticking...
