We were given an end-of-term school report with various level (cat levels?) for each subject.

What Levels should pupils reach at end of year 7, 8 , or 9?

DC should move up 2 sub levels per year.

So, if they were 4b at the end of Y6, they should be a 5c at the end of Y7.

But languages they have just started, will be different. Haven't you had a parents evening yet?

It's a bit of a "How long is a piece of string?" question. Depends on lots of factors, like what level they were working at at the end of Yr6 / what subject you are talking about (new subjects will generally be lower than maths and English say) / how accurate the levels at the end of Yr6 were / what topics they are covering (levels can go up and down quite a bit in subjects that are taught in a modular way).
Also depends on if they settle quickly into secondary or if they take a while to catch themselves at the start of a new school and when they have their spurts and plateaus. I agree with LesA about the 'average' progress over a year being 2 sublevls, but just like height or foot size, children go in spurts with their learning.
