Torn, to home Ed for a few months?

or to send to secondary school for a few months. DD will be in year 9. My other children will be at school, so not too many distractions! She has friends in area

Any particular reasons? (Apologies if I've missed lots of other threads!)

Maybe ask on the Home Ed board here - lots of good advice on there from people who've been there & got the t-shirt . . .

We are moving back from a posting abroad and only school place is ten miles away. (rural area). Have been advised that likely to be a few months on waiting list for more local secondary.

If you think you'd both enjoy it, it sounds like it could be a good opportunity for your dd - as I say, I'd go over to the HE boards and talk to people there.

You'll find all shades of home ed over there, from people who stick to a more formal curriculum (maybe appropriate if your dd is planning to go back into school) to those dc who are completely autonomous/self planning with their learning.

Of course it depends on your dd, but I would imagine it would be unsettling to go to one school, make friends, and then have to move in a few months, maybe nicer for her to have time to settle down properly and then go into her 'final' school. I'd definitely consider HE if it were my dd in those circs - but then we know lots of people who do HE, and dd has always had that as an option (though being an extremely sociable only child she's always preferred to go to school).

It sounds like quite a good idea but would depend on the answers to a few questions:

How likely would it be for DD to get a place at the preferred school in the autumn?
Would she enjoy a term of home ed, or would she be bored and feel isolated?
Would she be happy to go to a school for a term, knowing that she would have to move again?
If she went to the distant school, liked it and wanted to stay, how much of a problem would the travel be?
