Hello all, a 1st time poster here so please excuse the rambling. Planning to apply to some inde schls for my DS. Problem is I can't afford the fees having recently seperated. Question is do I include his father in the bursary/school application form and if I do will his income be taken into account?(the father only pays the mortgage and will not contribute to any sch fees). My DS is very talented (academic and sports)and currently in prep sch who have been very helpfull and given him a substantial reduction in fees due to the current situation and his talent. Any advice will be greatly appreciated. Many thanks

I think they will want you to detail the fathers income and expenses and that they will want to take this into consideration. Does he not pay you maintainance? If no perhaps you need a solicitor as well as a bursary. There is usually a box where you can add any personal details and I would explain the situation.

Yes they will want the fathers financial details too. Tons of kids at our school have fees paid by the absent parent in lieu of maintenance.

You should also make enquiries about scholarships. Some places offer very substantial discounts, a few even offering 100%. You may find that there are some schools that allow you to hold more than one scholarship. ds1 has an academic scholarship, a music scholarship as well as a bursary.

At dd's school bursary awards are assessed on both parents income and outgoings regardless of whether they are separated. This helps guard against the small minority who might be tempted to advise a school that they have a reduced income through separation when in fact they do not.
