DS (year 7) is struggling with maths, especially algebra. Can anyone recommend any good exercise books or websites where he can put into practice what he has learned. The ones I found mostly explained the concepts but without much practice. thanks

Khan academy? www.khanacademy.org/
they have short courses so he can catch up on things he doesn't understand.
It is very good for maths.

what does he have problems with? Do think if you called the unknown ? instead of x he would find it easier? Alternatively you could do word problems instead. This would give him more confidence with the techniques and then you could re introduce him to the concept of representing an unknown quantitly by a letter
