Progress report levels confusion?

I'm a bit of a newbie here. I am trying to understand levels my son has achieved in his progress report. He has a mixture of levels in different subjects, including a 6c for maths and a 7a for Biology. As I understand it 7a is quite high as he is only in year 7. Is there anyone who can help me decipher the levels. Thanks in advance.

The range of levels you can expect to see in a year 7 would be 3 to 7.

The average level would be a level 4 to 5c.

The national average at the end of year 9 is about a 5a.
