Can anyone explain what 1st and 2nd rounds are within admissions?

This is very much dependent on the LA. Many LAs don't have a second round. Those that do may, for example, not make any offers to parents who don't get any of their preferences in the first round, allow them to express preferences for those schools that still have places and then allocate places for them in the second round.

If you would like to tell us which LA is involved I may be able to provide more information.

Sutton

I have looked at their admission arrangements and their booklet and I can't find anything indicating that Sutton has a second round. As far as I can see you will be offered a place on 1st March. If that is not your first choice you will be place on the waiting list for every school that is a higher preference than the one you are offered. If a place becomes available and your child is at the head of the waiting list you will be offered it immediately.

Hi prh47bridge - Do you know how much time you are given to accept the offer you've been allocated? I'm in Sutton too.

Would Croydon be the same as Sutton?

mumwithtwokids - I don't know but they will want an answer reasonably quickly so that they can start processing the waiting lists. If you don't respond they must contact you again and give you an opportunity to respond before they can withdraw the offer.

AngelEyes46 - It appears to be, yes. By the way, it seems that neither Sutton nor Croydon start processing waiting lists until April.
