GCSE art

DD1 is hopefully doing this next year.
I have a feeling she needs to be organised and keep a portfolio of research and inspiration.
Her teacher was a bit vague, he had a huge queue on parents evening.
Any pointers would be very gratefully revived as I did biology as my light relief and DH did Latin.

Sorry, that's a bit cheeky. Art is a serious subject.
DD1 is doing it because she loves it, but she isn't that good. If she's to get a respectable grade she is going to have to take the whole process seriously. Being dyslexic and a bit disorganised I suspect she may need a bit of support.
DH and I studied her other subjects, but art is a mystery.

My only piece of advice would be to check the schools' results for art in the past and read up yourself on the guidelines/specifications for the subject on the website of your examining body. As far as I can see GCSE art is internally marked, but externally moderated so you need to have confidence that the art dept at the school have a realistic idea of what work is worth what mark. I say this from seeing a friend's daughter predicted an A grade (at scottish school where work is externally marked but reviewed and given an estimate internally by teacher) failed completely due to wildly out of line marking by teacher and error on teachers part in allowing pupil to submit work which was outwith the guidelines. Shouldn't be up to the parents to have to read the curriculum, markers guidelines and examiners reports on website, but had they done so they would have seen that the pupils work was not going to score high marks before it was submitted.

I would say loving art will stand her in good stead. The volume of work is huge if its done properly. Dd1 didn't love it but liked it well enough at the start of yr10. However the amount of work she had to produce had her seriously tearing her hair out by the end of yr11 and she was very glad when it was over.

Dd2 is now in year 10 and seems to be enjoying it more than her sister. But even she is spending many lunchtimes in the art room, just to keep on top of the work and she is not sitting in there alone!!

Neither of them were expected to begin yr10 with a folder of source material, although I don't suppose it would do any harm. It just might not have any relevance to the work they will undertake.

Not sure what board they do and, for some reason, we don't have art grades, but we have lots of other subjects.
Art is one of their specialisms so they ought to know what they are doing.
