Just started one 2 one literacy tuition with a boy who is very reluctant. The only topic that seems to engage him is the fact that he a
wants to be a carpenter. I need to find some texts, fiction or non fiction that cover this. He is year 8 and supposed to be working on reading comprehension, I am hoping if I can find a text that engages him we might begin to make some progress.

What about 'Understanding Wood: A Craftsman's Guide to Wood Technology' by R.Bruce Hoadley? Interesting material with scope for comprehension questions. He'll learn a lot about wood too!

Try some of the publications from www.thegmcgroup.com/pc/viewCategories.asp?idCategory=579
many of the books are based around teaching people to make specific items.
There are also magazines available, often in WH Smiths. You could either use the text, or cannibalise the materials to create your own.
I'll have a think about other possibilities.

The Bible?

Joseph was a carpenter.

Little house in the Big woods?... I know you'll laugh, but there are bits in there all about house-building, men using their hands to make things, men working in teams, self-discipline, living by ones' wits, etc. :).

Thank you, some good ideas to follow up, believe me i need all the ones I can get. Had thought of the bible but i'm not sure this particular character would be impressed.
