Sports assessment is very science based and thorough. Boys will be beep tested for overall fitness strength conditioning and agility tested then brief sports based assessment for main rugby/football/cricket/hockey. Following this initial assessment there are call backs for 4 main sports which involve 2+ hours of whichever sport. Swimming is assessed separately and usually the morning of the sports assessment. A lot of emphasis is placed on the fitness assessment and in general it seems a very good beep test with county/district/academy representation in one sport and aptitude in at least one other should be enough for a scholarship. However it all depends on the competition and 11+ this year is a very strong sports year so the more boxes you can tick the better your chances. Good luck and hope this helps.

My son did this 2 years ago. It was very thorough and he got a call back. On call back though they seemed to know who they were after. He was not offered a scholarship and the only ones I heard of that year were 10%. Be prepared as the whole day is used as a massive push, any sporty boy will be desperate to go once they have shown them the sales pitch trailer. I think it is used more as an inducement. Having said that once he had been seen for sport they made it clear at interview they wanted him, his interview was with head of sport, so I think it was worthwhile to up your profile in the application process. Hope that it helpful.

My son has not been called back after the sports assessment. Does this mean he has not been considered for a sport scholarship?
Any ideas?

What is his specialism? They will mainly call back team sports, so athletes may not get a callback.

Swimming and soccer. He was hugely disappointed with the assessment, because he could not display his skills.

That is a shame. But if he gets a place then he'll still have every chance of being in teams etc, and they do consider the internal boys for awards at 13+ if they have passed over someone who then shines out. They will also take note of his Surrey swim times etc.
