Are you a pushy parent?

I was reading another thread and its made me wonder what pushy really means? And does it really help?
My MIL was/is pushy personified but ultimately it didn't do any good. Should we be more laid back and let our DC's get on with it? How do we achieve the right balance?

I am selectively pushy. Music, dancing and sport are great and if DC want to do them, I'll support them. Maths and English are the keys to everything, and I am very pushy about those.

DD1 is not yet four, and if we are waiting in the car or going round the supermarket, I often drill her on her basic maths. I am sure there are other parents rolling their eyes at us, but I don't care. I want her to have an excellent career, and never have to depend on anyone else for money. I don't want her to get ripped off. I don't want her to get into debt because she doesn't understand compound interest. She needs maths for all of these things.

Likewise I don't tolerate baby talk. I couldn't give a shit if anyone eavesdropping on the bus is thinking Jesus Christ, lady, no pre-schooler needs to know about the subjunctive.
