Is anyone surprised Marlborough College couldn't appoint a new Headmaster?

I read in the Times last week that Marlborough will be starting the 2012 academic year without a Headmaster as all the candidates withdrew. I was really surprised a school like this could not appoint someone. What do you think?

I think they specified they needed an IB expert (or was it Pre-U?). Limited their options big time.

Surely they will have to have an Acting Head until they appoint someone? The school can't run without a head, can it?

This is a common theme at the moment. I suspect my large, inner London state school would pay a headteacher's salary at a similar amount. We also did not appoint this term. I have heard of similar stories from others.

Basically, it is now too big a job for the salaries that are being offered.

Interesting, as I was thinking about visiting the school with a view to use it as a back up if DS doesn't get offered a place at Winchester. Perhaps I won't bother as I really like Canford anyway.
