What A Levels for Geography at university?

DD is trying to decide what A levels or IB higher to do. She wants to do geography or similar at university (and then do something to do with volcanos ).

She's thinking about Chemistry but would Physics be better? She also wants to do P&R and geograpy higher.

It really depends whether she wants to study Geography as a Science (BSc) or Humanity (BA) at degree level.
For Science route Chemistry is a good option as it covers aspects of pollution and global warming which overlap with areas of the Geography curriculum.
Biology is also a good option for environmental science as changes to climate can affect wildlife.
Physics is really only needed if you want to specialise in weather forecasting (meteorology) at degree level.
For the humanities route there are aspects of Human Geography that have good links with Economics and the social sciences or other humanities e.g. History or R.E.
Am not sure what P&R is so cannot comment on this option.

I did Maths physics and geography
but it depends on whether she leans towards physical or economic geography
the physics was useful for understanding fluid dynamics but chemistry would be useful for understanding geomorphology

I did Chemistry intending to go on to do stuff with volcanoes and then promptly switched off the geography course within 2 weeks. Ironic, really, as I now live in the world's most active volcano.

I have just asked my DC who is in their 2nd year at Bristol doing geography. Many degree courses have a first year which includes both physical and human geography so you need a broad base. They say:
"It depends what type of geography course. Bristol is a BSc so here I would suggest a combination of geog, chem,economics,english/history maybe maths, even biology.
If you want to do physical it probably helps to have maths and chemistry.
For human geog do include an essay writing subject e.g. philosophy, history maybe maths to AS level."

think she's tending towards the physical stuff, volcanoes, earthquakes, global warming etc.

P&R is philosophy and religion.

So if she did IB she'd get the maths, english, humanities bits in too so wouldn't need to completely be focussed on BSc or BA yet.
