Need very quick answers please - what should dd and I wear to independent school open day tomorrow?

This is a very last-minute request (have posted in style & beauty too), having just decided this afternoon that sporty dd and I are going to attend an open day at Millfield School in Somerset tomorrow. Here: www.millfieldschool.com/index.htm

She currently attends a comp, could only go there if she won a scholarship for the sixth form, and we're both desperate not to stand out for the wrong reasons.

What does one and one's 15-year-old teenager wear on such an occasion?

Really- we saw all types when we viewed schools, independent and state maintained alike.

Comfortable shoes! Your dd - take what she would normally wear on a Saturday - scan for obviously scruffy bits and remove - then go with that. I definately wouldn't go too smart for you- but not blue jeans and trainers either. Plainish trousers and a pretty top?

That's really useful, many thanks - have had some good replies in style and beauty too, but will definitely not go with the suggestion of boater and cravat!

Hi, I have just spoken to my DS who is in the U6 and helps show parents/students round on open days. He says that there is a real variety. The campus is very large so comfortable shoes are vital. I would second trousers and a pretty top. There are usually so many people there on an open day that there are few chances to stand out for positive or negative reasons! An open day is a chance for you to see the school, but having said that I worried about what to wear when we visited too.

Do you know we visited lots of schools in the run up to secondary and I remember working myself into a state about some of them. Not so much DC more me- how would I manage 'smart casual' was agonising. I learned my lesson with DC though , the first one we took her to everyone else was in quite scruffy mufti and i made her wear her uniform.. well, she was having to do some tests and it was a school day After that I just let her get on with it ..

Everything here (and from "style and beauty") was spot on - huge range of dress styles - one boy and his family looked like they'd just stepped off a farm in muddy boots, him wearing wellies. I bet they were minted though!

Dd eventually wore a jumpsuit with a t-shirt underneath, cardigan and flat boots - we did a lot of walking, so sensible footwear was vital.

We were so engrossed with all the information and seeing the school, that any concerns or nervousness on dd's part soon disappeared.

Oh boy, what will your next post ask? "What colour ink shall we write the cheque for the school fees in?"
