Yr 10 gcse food tech

anyone else dd/ds doing this? or maybe a teacher of this subject

if so what are they cooking? just bought all ingredients for fridge cake my daughter is making this week,including 2 meringue nests, maltesers, mini marshmallows 10 glace cherries.

i may be a bit stingy but surely this is extravagent?

Am very puzzled why they would be making a fridge cake as this is something we do in Y8!
Maybe they are looking at different cakes and cake making methods. Have they been making other cakes?
Usually in Y10 the practicals are very skills based eg, sauces, pastry, cake making methods, meat, fish.

It could be that the teacher has given them a design brief such as a childrens party and they have to make a suitable product to serve at such an event.

What reason does you dd give you?

thank you for your reply. I did ask her and she keeps saying 'its to do with carbs' and' its the jamie oliver fridge cake one'. i initally thought could it be her interpretation of something as it includes everything she likes!

sorry forgot to add their not looking at cakes, last week was a quiche, with ready-made pastry, single cream etc week before banoffe pie which was again all ready prepared ie the carnation tin of caramel.

im no domestic godess but it does seem pretty excessive use of the pre-prepared.

they do have a double lesson in which to do the practical.

can i ask what your yr 10s have been making?

My students have a double lesson (2 hours) as well which is plenty of time to make products from scratch.

There is a need for students to be aware of the use of pre-prepared standard components but this seems excessive. Is it a trained Food Tech teacher or do they have a supply/non specialist who doesn't have the skills to do it from scratch.

So far mine have done:-

Profiteroles
Quiche/Lemon meringue pie
Danish pastries/sausage rolls

All from scratch to study choux/shortcrust and flaky pastry methods and ingredients.

They will before xmas do:-

christmas cakes
bread and bread products
sauces - roux and puree making curry or sweet and sour and also lasagne with their own inventive twist.

We do the AQA specification but don't think other boards are that diferent.

Very strange indeed. I really object to parents paying out loads of money unless it is a substantial product which can be the evening meal or part of.

This is a reason to do Home Economics rather than Food Tech.
