Help needed please - DD (yr7) homework - SCIENCE!!!!!

DD has been asked to do a poster on a specialised cell. They have been working on plant cells in school etc.

She has chosen to do a circulatory cell (now this is where I need help!) She has written all about blood vessels, blood, the 3 major parts (heart,blood and blood vessels)she has also written about the circulatory system, she has a facts box all about blood and another on the heart.

Does anyone know whether this is relevant to a circulatory cell or has she got side tracked as she actually hasn't mentioned anything apart from the title about circulatory cell.

Bless her heart, she has spent nearly 2 hrs doing this work ( I am a little concerned as its a supposedly 20 min homework slot!!!)

Idve thought if doing about circulatory cells it would be about either a red or a White blood cell. So if doing about a red blood cell then about how they are produced in the bone marrow and have haemoglobin which allows them to carry oxygen etc

Ok sounds like she has gone a bit off topic but sounds like she has been inspired and enthusiastic so as a teacher I would be v impressed and pleased to see her work :)

I suspect all she needs to do is provide info about one of the cells found in the blood. I would get her to add something to her work specific about White blood cells: what their job is (ie. To fight disease and infection) and get her to draw a labelled diagram of one.

Have told her to leave it for tonight, she has 5 more pieces of other homework to do as well. Busy weekend for her!

PS she thinks her science teacher is fab and I think she really wants to impress (esp as she is new to the school!)

Oh my goodness. Is that what I'll be "helping" DD with in a year's time? Just the whiff of a bunsen burner at the open evening the other day was enough to give me unpleasant flashbacks. I have no scientific understanding at all. I didn't understand the OP. Eeek!

Sounds like she has confused the circulatory system with a single cell. I would getbher to do a bit on the red blood cell but say that it is part of the circulatory system so shevcan make the other work relevant.

Ps include increased surface area As it is a biconcave disc, no nucleus so more space inside for carrying oxygen, and contains haemoglobin which binds with oxygen and say it is flexible so can squeezebthrough tiny capillaries

Thank you - will mention it to her tomorrow, poor love has just gone to bed very tearful, the mountain of homework has just made her all weepy. She has kept up with homework etc, but on Thursday evenings she does ballet, she did some homework before and was shattered after ballet and work did not need to be in before Monday so I said leave it till weekend, poor thing then got 4 more pieces today!

Oh that's so sad when the amount of hwk is too much. Poor thing is only year 7. I'm not in favour of much hwk myself. You know if it is upsetting her you could just tell her to do 20 mins then stop, and write a note to the teacher concerned. Plus if it is a regular thing that she gets loads from different teachers all at once don't hesitate to contact the head of year to let them know. Hope she doesn't spend all weekend worryingvand working.

DD did her homework all over again this morning, completely different this time - she chose a nerve cell. I kept an eye on her and although she spent an hour on it she kept on track and managed to do a lovely piece of work with diagrams etc. Fingers crossed its okay, it has to be handed in tomorrow.

DD came home so pleased tonight - the reason being that in Science the teacher chose to talk about nerve cells and DD could answer questions! phew.

Lets hope her h/w gets the mark that she deserves just through hard work and perseverance - fingers crossed.

Where does your DD go to school? Sounds great, private? state?

Sounds like she did go off at a bit of a tangent with the homework - but that kind of effort is never wasted, she's still gaining knowledge which will come in useful at some point.

Might be a good idea in future though for her to be a bit strategic - i.e. have a think about what exactly the teacher is expecting to see, and make sure that's done, then she can do extra stuff afterwards if she wants to and time allows.

I'm sure she'll do fine, she's put in a lot more time than the expected 20 minutes after all!

Ds1 had to do a model of a cell for homework, any cell he choose. Again, I wish they had been more specific about what size model, what amount of information, how long it was expected to take etc.

I think these creative projects(we get lots of posters, fliers, travel brochures, advert type homeworks) take much longer than they should partly because teacher doesn'tmake it clear how much is expected.

Also, never quite sure whether they are meant to go for the "Catchy" "offbeat" angle or just INFORMATION. Also you can spend a lot of time drawing when in fact that is not the point of science/geography/history (imo)
