missed exam

my son is taking maths in order to join a foundation year pre studying physics at Nottm. uni ( all is in place for him to go in september). Insanely, for his last exam he wrote 1 p.m. instead of 9 a.m. and consequently missed sitting it. has all his work been in vain and has he blown his dream out of the water? He is 20 and got side tracked in his teens but physics has always been his first love.:(

You need to ring the school pronto, but yes, I imagine so.

He will not be able to resit now until the next exam series if it is an AS/A2 paper that mean January, if GCSE then November.
Was your son not given his copy of entries? This lists exactly the dates/times/length of each paper entered for. But, without sounding horrible if he is so careless about times of exams is he up to living at Uni?

I don't think you need to ring the school. He needs to talk to his tutor himself and find out if anything can be done. Perhaps the uni will be understanding, you never know. But as an adult at 20 years old, it's his job to sort it, not yours.

I would speak to his tutor and ring the university direct but sadly I doubt there is anything they will be able to do, but its well worth a try as you've got nothing to lose.
It happens from time to time even with the best kids - did the school/college not try contacting him?

I was going to say that most schools would ring the students at home to find out where they were. If they live close enough to the school it may be possible to start the exam late.
Requirements for a foundation degree may be slightly different to an honours degree so could we worth checking with the university. It may be possible for him to transfer to another course such as an HND if this is offered. Also find out what the exam boards policy is on missed exams and how this may affect his overall grade.

Thanks for all your posts. He wasnt contacted by collage but realised his error and got there asap but not soon enough to sit. His tutor has offered to write a recommendation and uni are looking into a slightly different course that he can use to side step into pure physics at a later date( as mentioned above). It has always been my policy to let him make his own mistakes and stand on his own feet but I occasionally wonder, if I had been a more pushy parent maybe he would have knuckled down in his early teens rather than following the herd and certainly he would not have missed his exam had I insisted on checking his timetable ! Whilst I cant be accused of nannying him he will always be my boy and what hurts him is agony to me though I would never let on.

Just had a happy ending. He has been offered a place regardless of his tardiness- seems uni are more interested in his brain than his common sense thank heavens. Hopefully this will be his wake up call.

And think how careful he'll be about exam times in the future !
