Unplanned move to UK, DS missed the 11+test, desperate for help/info

Hi there, We are moving on short notice from Singapore to the UK and DS will turn 11 in May this year. We are looking at independent schools.
I am completely foxed - looks like he's missed the 11+ test. I thought I could apply individually to the schools and get a separate testing done but am aghast to read on one of the school websites that
"As from September 2010, ?In Year? applications have to be made directly with Local Authorities. Parents can no longer make direct applications to schools. If a vacancy occurs, parents who have applied through their Local Authority about ?In Year? admissions will be contacted to arrange a test for their child. Vacancies of this kind in Years 7 to 11 are rare"
Is this true and if it is ...what options are we left with :-(

If you are looking at independent, then it will be nothing to do with the local authority. You always apply to schools direct. Are you sure that was a private school? There is plenty of movement in the private system due to parents job moves etc, so you should be able to find a space. A lot of boys schools go up to 13 and they take an exam at 12/13. So you could probably get him into a prep school until he's 13.

Which part of london are you planning to live in? Someone might have a good suggestion.

What about Belmont/Mill Hill School

That sounds like a state school policy not independent. Most independents may well have filled theri 11+ places (each has its own tests different to state 11+) but some parents may still be keeping options open so could yet decline a place before the beginning of next term. You need to speak to each to find out what the position is .

Why not call a couple of schools near St J's and see what they say? No experience as my children are younger and at pre prep but what Nimpy says many preps go to 13.
