My son (y9) has to choose his options this week. Im very confused.

He is already studying higher gcse maths and is the top set, he is currently level 6a.
For all other subjects he is in 2nd set from 5. From his latest report all other subjects he is a 5a/b. What I am wanting to know is realisticaly what grades in gcse would he likely to acheive???

Hope someone can help.

Ask his teachers. He will have predicted GCSE grades already using a system like Fischer Family Trust. They will (rather bizarrely) normally be based on his KS2 SATS results. It also depends on the school - when I worked in an outstanding school they upped the targets/predictions further.

If he is already doing GCSE work in Maths why is he still getting a KS3 level rather than a GCSE grade?

He may not have predicted GCSE results yet. At our school they do Yellis testing in the final term of Y9 and base the predictions on that, disregarding the FFT data and KS2 results.
