Grade C Maths GCSE - and B needed: Advice please

My DS got bored with GCSE Maths and got a C. He's now doing the IB and has got completely enthused about studying. He's doing the Maths Studies - for the less mathematical student - and is surprising himself by working at Level 7.

The university course he really wants to do requires GCSE Maths at B. Has he completely shot himself in the foot?

Would it be sensible to resit the GCSE (given that IB is hugley demanding)? Or if he gets a 7 in maths studies, will this be seen as an equivalent?

Any advice welcome on this - and much appreciated

Phone the university and ask.

If he is managing to maintain a Level 7 at Maths Studies, he really shouldn't have too much trouble improving a C grade at GCSE.

I would say that a 7 in Studies at the end of the course shows a level of mathematical knowledge beyond that required to get an A* at GCSE.

Contacting the Uni sounds like sound advice, but do not be worried if they insist on a B, it sounds like he has the ability.

Thanks, that's very helpful. I think I'll give it a whirl and see what they say.

My Nieces maths grade was not really good enough for the course she wanted to do (computer science) and she was turned down.
Her tutor from college wrote to university and supported her, basically saying she was due to get all distinctions for her DIDA and would they give her a second chance because she was worth it.
They did and said as long as she came and passed their own maths test and she got distinctions for her DIDA she had an offer. She did both and is doing really well.
