Does anyone know who marks entrance papers for schools and whether they are moderated?

the school management team presumably
why would they need moderating?
certain schools accept very low pass marks if daddy's wallet is fat enough

The relevant head of department, or member of dept with responsibility for admissions. They would only need moderating if more than one person was marking a paper ( very unlikely). What matters, after all, is the rank order, not the numerical score.

Let's say A sits exam at school in consortium 1 and wants to go to other schools in the consortium. If each school is marking their own papers there does neeed to be moderating amongst the schools t nsure that child A has not been marke more harshly or leniently than child B who sat the same test at another school. Also, within school to ensure the teachers marking are being consistent. Ou DC's take along time preparing for the tests and it would be awful to think they might have scored a higher mark jsut by sitting test at another school. Maths is objective marki scheme easy to apply however writng paper less so.

Most entrance exams are school specific so would be marked internally. I think Common Entrance is sent to the school the child is aiming for. I assume ESEB then moderate at random.

For an independent school, surely its entirely up to them how and what they do. They are not accountable to external bodies for who they choose to admit.

Lizzywishes · 27/01/2011 19:22

Sorry, I was talking about the independent day school where I teach. We set and mark our own entrance papers -no other schools involved. Same for all day independents in my area.

Also meant to ask what sort of schools you are talking about, lemony. Our applicants come in and sit the exam with us all together.
