Private secondaries - how many 11+ versus 13+ intake?

I realise it's probably different for each school but I was wondering if there was a usual split between the number of kids who enter at 11 via an 11+ type entrance exam versus the number going via Common Entrance at 13?

I would imagine it would roughly indicate the ratio of state primary:private prep kids. Is that right?

It does vary. Trinity in Croydon for example took 130 ish boys at 11+ Sept 2010 and will take only 30ish in at 13+ to same year group in 2012. Many prep children still take 11+ - dc's loses at least a 1/3 at 11, relatively more girls than boys.

not necessarily hairy - certainly round here day schools nearly all do main admissions at 11 not 13, for both boys and girls, as do those where boarders are in a minority.
A lot of schools now have their own feeder junior schools as well as admitting from state and other preps.

Unless you quizzed every school on its intake figures, I doubt you'd find out.

Also, I'm not sure how you'd correlate previous schooling to entrance point to the school, given the huge confounding factor of Forces families in boarding schools.

ds's school takes around 50% prep/50% state primary at 11+ but also has an intake at 10+ and then takes another 25-30ish at 13+

Out of ds's friends way, way more than half joined at either 10+ or 11+ from prep schools (he was at state primary) so maybe it was different in his year - or his friendships are just a bit skewed!

At my DS's school, they have a five form entry at 11+, roughly one-third from their own prep school, one-third from other prep schools, and one-third from primary schools. This is not prescribed, but roughly how it works out each year. They add a further two forms in year 9 for CE candidates, who are almost always from prep schools.

This works out at about 36 students from primary schools in Y7, and 74 from independent. Add in 44 CE candidates in Y9, and the Y9 group is about 75% private, 25% state.

You certainly can't assume that prep school children won't join at 11+. To be honest if I was going for a senior school which started at 11, I'd almost certainly want my child transferring then with the majority rather than trying to fit in 2 years later.

Dd's school has an intake of 60 children at 11 (via school's own entrance exam) for years 7 and 8 then takes 80 more children at 13 (via CE, Scholarship or school's own entrance exam).

Not round here (North West)- AFAIK all the private schools are junior up to year 6, seniors 11+.

Girls schools almost exclusively do 11+.

Boys schools vary. Traditionaly they have had 13+ entry but an increasing number do 11+ now, some have main intake at 11+ and some are even stopping the 13+ entry completely.

You need to check with the individual schools.
