Secondary School App - Alternate Addresses

Hi my parents live near a good secondary school and I am wondering about pro/cons/logistics of using my parents address when applying as we are currently out of area. We will try and sell and move before then but in the current market this might prove tricky. Dd is currently Y4. Thanks in advance.

Don't do it, its not worth it!! Put everything you have into moving into the right area before the forms have to be filled in.

You won't get away with it; when your child is offered a place, they will want to see proof of address. If you can't provide it, the place will be taken away.

You need to move.

Thanks Guys, I wasn't trying to be underhand just fearful of not selling our house by the time we have to choose schools.

It would not be commutable if we stayed in our current area so we might actually have to move to my parents (eek) or rent in the area.

Many schools ask to see your Child Benefit records....

You also have the minor problem of being in a primary school who do have your address and therefore a school record with it on.
There is not a chance that you will get away with it.
So you need to get the house up for sale now and hope that you are lucky. You do have a reasonable amount (effectively 21 months) of time to sell the house. The alternative is to rent in the area you want and to then rent out your other house but you then need to have done that by the cutoff date and to be talking about a longish term rent (12 months) to have convinced the LA admission team that this is a permanent move.

Thanks Admission for your comments. Rent-to-rent might be the best option to consider if we don't have any joy selling.

Yep, rent. If you are thinking of moving into catchment anyway, it'll a) ensure your DC's place at the more desirable secondary and b) make it unchallengeable and 'legal'. Bear in mind there are some on here who think moving house to get your DC into the 'right' school is moral cheating, too!

FWIW I believe a DC should have to relinquish their school place if there's a waiting list if they move out of catchment at the end of their KS. The '6 month (possibly vacant!) renter' thing is morally suspect.
